These two pieces were written and recorded at the beginning of the pandemic. Distant No. 2 was born out on an urge to create a space for calm and reflection during the unknown days we were all hurtling through. It consists of two improvised pianos takes, each in a slightly different register, and recorded independently from one another. While there’s certainly an element of “randomness” to the recording, I found they matched up quite well and in interesting ways. Distant No. 1 was written almost as quickly as it was played as I was getting oriented and preparing to record No. 2.

I recently returned to these recordings and found they still had a certain power and relevance to what’s happening in the world today and decided to share them with everyone for Piano Day.
