Shortly after moving to Portland over 8 years ago I discovered and fell in love with poetry. Over the years the poetry community here in Portland has been very vibrant and inspiring to me. One of the writers here whose work I immediately resonated with, and gravitated towards, was Zachary Schomburg. Through his writing Zachary creates strange, beautiful, and at times surreal, worlds that the reader is encouraged to enter into and we learn more about ourselves through doing so. His creativity and willing to take chances has always been something I’ve found very inspiring.

Zachary and I first collaborated a couple years ago for a performance piece involving a series of poems he wrote titled “Haircuts” for which I wrote a twelve-and-a-half minute piece for violin and electronics. Last year, to celebrate the release of his debut novel, “Mammother”, Zachary conducted an all-day reading of the entire novel starting at sunrise and lasting into the evening. He invited different musicians to accompany him throughout the day while he read. I came early in the morning and played an improvised viola set. A few days later, plugging my loop pedal back on, I realized that the last loop I had created during the performance was still saved. While letting the loop play out, I started improvising a simple cello progression over it. The performance was still fresh on my mind as was the novel which I was in the middle of reading at the time. The piece naturally bloomed from this.
